Recently many countries are interested in gas fermentation as one of alternatives for producing materials using fossil fuels. Thus, it is inevitable to improve gas transfer efficiency for higher growth and production, and especially for aerobic microorganisms, transfer of oxygen is very important. Since small scale experiments are proceeded as basis before scale-up to the reactor, enhancement of gas transfer in small scale process is significant. To figure out the effectiveness of baffles in gas transfer, Escherichia coli is cultivated in non-baffled flask, traditional baffled flask, and newly designed baffled flask with air for 24 hours. For more accurate comparison, 3-D printer was used to manufacture flasks in PLA and the growth rate of Escherichia coli is much faster in the newly designed baffled flask. Thus, gas transfer is expected to be enhanced by using the newly designed baffled flask and as a result, the productivity is also anticipated to be increased. |
