Extracting edible health beneficial ingredients from Korean Ginseng requires water-ethansol solvent extraction. Since edible ethanol solvent cannot be economical to be used only once and wasted, it is necessary to recover some sufficiently concentrated ethanol through distillation. We carried out a series of batch distillation experiments for water-ethanol mixture. In our experiments, energy was calculated as wattage times time increment. Using the non-equilibrium thermodynamic models, we computed the time dependent top product composition and flow rate under a given wattage history. We compared the non-equilibrium and equilibirum computation results of temperature, composition and flow rates evolutions with experimental results. An optimized set of the batch distillation conditions will be presented. |
