Cascade layer at photoanode interfaces: Enhanced efficiency via tungsten doped blocking layer in TiO2-based mesoporous dye-sensitized solar cells |

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) fabricated at low-cost are regarded as one of the most promising photovoltaic devices. Metal doping in TiO2 offers broad tuning of the semiconductor band structure. Devices involving a sequence of layers comprised of different concentrations of metal dopants selected to have different band gaps, offer the possibility of funneling energy toward the current collector. This paper reports the design and fabrication of a W-doped TiO2 graded blocking layer, which can effectively increase the short circuit current by introducing graded energy levels and improve the open circuit potential by introducing blocking layers to reduce charge recombination. In particular, the graded 1-5-7-9 W blocking layer exhibits the highest photovoltaic performance of 11.54 %, which is 50 % higher than the basic DSSCs without a blocking layer. |
