Hydrocarbon-based polymer electrolyte membrane with comb-shaped architecture synthesized by grafting of poly(arylene ether sulfone) backbone and highly sulfonated poly(arylene sulfide sulfone) side chain has been investigated for fuel cell application. The backbone composed of flexible ether group was synthesized via condensation polymerization, varying the amount of pendant hydroxyl groups. The side chain was post-sulfonated with fuming sulfuric acid. The hydroxyl group of the backbone and the reactive end of the side chain was then grafted, differing the molecular weight and the frequency of the side chain to control the ion exchange capacity. Graft polymers with different ion exchange capacity were analyzed for ion conductivity as functions of temperature and relative humidity, water uptake, dimensional change, and membrane electrode assembly performance. |
