Hemi-cylindrical mesoporous silica-graphene composite |

We suggest the synthesis of mesoporous graphene-silica composite as a supporting material of sulfur for Lithium-Sulfur batteries. The ordered porous structure of silica was synthesized parallel to functionalized graphene sheets via ternary cooperative assembly among graphene, silica precursor, and a block copolymer. Well-defined, unique mesoporous structure consisted of half conductive carbon and half insulating silica features both good polysulfides retention ability and high rate capability in Li-S battery resulting from electronic conductivity of graphene and dual functions of silica as structure building block and in-situ polysulfide ab-/ad-sorbing agent. We expect that a) the well-defined mesoporous silica structure exhibits high polysulfide retention and allows for fast reaction kinetics of sulfur, b) the graphene alleviates the insulating nature of silica and sulfur and c) the synthesis of m-GS is conducted under mild conditions. |
