Graphite has attracted attention due to its potential applications. Although graphite is the stacks of graphene layers with weaker van der Waals forces, it is difficult to be exfoliated to yield individual graphene sheets. Hence, graphite was generally exfoliated by mixture of strong acids and then heat treated at high temperature to expandable graphite. However, this method turns graphite into graphene oxide (GO) introducing numerous oxidized defects. As a result, GO becomes almost electrically insulating material. To overcome this problem, we would like to introduce organic wedges on the edge of graphite via electrophilic substitution reaction in a mild polyphosphoric acid (PPA)/phosphorous pentoxide (P2O5) medium. The resultant functionalized graphite is readily dispersible in polar aprotic solvents. The characterization of the functionalized graphite will be conducted with EA, EDX, XRD, FT-IR, and TGA. The graphene structure will be confirmed with TEM, Raman and AFM. |
