Buckling phenomena can be found in elastomeric films or structures when compressive stresses are applied. The buckled patterns have been utilized as a useful tool for the applications such as optical gratings, microfluidic devices, etc. Recently, some reserchers reported lateral buckling of high aspect ratio structures, which is originated from the compressive stress during swelling of the confined structures or metal depositions. In this presentation, we show a mechano-responsive lateral buckling of polymeric structures. The wavelength and the amplitude of the buckled patterns can be manipulated by the design of structures and the strain applied to the structures. Also, we demonstrate an optical application by exploiting the scattering effect of the laterally buckled arrays. |
