Remarkably improved sPEEK nanocomposite membrane for PEMFC via Grotthuss mechanism |

Conventional hydrocarbon nanocomposite membranes have been studied to enhance its low proton conductivity by using sulfonated inorganic particles. However, most inorganic particles blocked proton transport in ionic channels due to large size of nanoparticles or their agglomerates. Nevertheless, researches on nanocomposite membranes have been focused on only enhancing ion exchange capacity by increasing the amount of particles with no regard for the size of ionic channels. Proton conductivity can be enhanced innovatively by promoting proton conduction through acid-base moieties. We synthesized proton donors and acceptors based on POSS and nanocomposited with sPEEK. POSS can be well dispersed in nanochannel. Maximum proton conductivity of nanocomsposite membrane was 0.125 S/cm, which was almost 78% higher than sPEEK. We will present the effect of proton donor-acceptor on the conductivity and cell performance and explain why. |
