Efficiency Improvement in Dye-Sensitized solar Cells Attributed to SnO2 Nanoparticles in Polymer Electrolyte |

PEO-based polymer electrolytes, especially in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), have received great attention as an alternative to solve the inherent problems of liquid electrolyte such as solvent evaporation or leakage. However DSSCs employing polymer electrolyte mostly exhibit the lower energy conversion efficiency than that of liquid electrolyte primarily due to their lower ionic conductivity of I-/I3- and poor interfacial contact between the electrolyte and dyes. Herein, metal oxides (SnO2, 100 nm) as nanofillers are added into the polymer electrolyte as an approach to modify the morphological and electrochemical properties of the electrolyte. The incorporation of the SnO2 nanoparticles in the polymer electrolyte manifests the improvement in both the I3- diffusion coefficient and the open-circuit voltage due to the upward shift of the TiO2 band-edge, resulting in the higher energy conversion efficiency. |
