Barium-doped and strontium-doped SiO2/TiO2 hollow nanospheres(Ba–HNS, Sr-HNS, ca. 50 nm in diameter) are readily synthesized from SiO2/TiO2 core/shell nanospheres using alkali-earth-metal hydroxide solution treatment. Nerve growth factor(NGF) is encapsulated into HNSs and they are investigated to facilitate neurite differentiation and outgrowth in PC12 cells. Regardless of HNS type, neurite differentiation efficiency is significantly improved by HNSs. The neurite length is in order of Sr-HNS>Ba-HNS>p-HNP because barium and strontium induces additional elongation of neurite growth. Compared with the results of previous work, NGF encapsulated Sr-HNSs are particularly efficient for promoting neuronal differentiation. Ba- and Sr-HNSs provide a possible application of metal-composite nanomaterials in tissue engineering. |
