Control of optical properties of Gd2O3: Eu/Bi and application to prepare emissive pearl pigments |

Gd2O3:Eu is one of red phosphors with high photoluminescence, which has been used in display, lamp, security ink and so on. The excitation characteristics of phosphors are critical to determine the application field. Eu-doped Gd2O3 is known to high emission under 254 nm ultraviolet excitation. The excitation properties of Gd2O3:Eu is known to be controlled by codoping Bi3+ ions. To achieve high emission, the dopants should be well distributed into host matrix. In this viewpoint, the spray pyrolysis is a excellent preparation method because it makes it possible to homogenously mix all ingredients in a nano level. In this work, Gd2O3:Eu/Bi red phosphor particles were synthesized by the spray pyrolysis, and the optical properties were optimized by changing the Bi3+ content or the Bi/Eu mole ratio. Also, the particle size and microstructure of Gd2O3:Eu/Bi were controlled by introducing some additives into the precurosr solution. Finally, the optically optimized phosphor was coated on the pearl pigment to see its potential applicability as a security material. |
