In generally, commercial polarizing films are produced from atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (a-PVA). However, a-PVA/iodine complex films have a serious problem of iodine desorption under hot and humid conditions, which results mainly from the higher affinity of a-PVA molecules to water than to iodines. The physical properties of PVA are highly dependent on the degree of syndiotacticity. So, in this study, to overcome this defect by improving water resistance of a-PVA, the high molecular weight (HMW) a-PVA/HMW syndiotactic PVA (s-PVA) blend polarizing films were prepared by casting an aqueous solution with various a-PVA/s-PVA blend ratio of 100/0, 90/10, 70/30, 50/50, 30/70, 10/90, and 0/100 (wt%). To check the heat and humidity resistance of the a-PVA/s-PVA blend polarizing films, the transmittance and the polarizing efficiency were examined. Moreover the physical properties of the films also performed. |
