Pyrogallol (PG) and other polyphenols have been used to coat the surfaces by their adhesive moiety such as catechol and gallol (Ga). However, gallol has a limitation to use at cell because of its toxicity. Here, we engineered the surface of the red blood cell (RBC) by taking advantage of biocompatible hyaluronic acid (HA) and adhesive gallol to form surface adhesive, thin but safer shell for cell. Coating RBC with Ga-conjugated HA (HA-ga) covered its antigen, and HA-ga coated RBCs showed decreased production of inflammatory cytokines than bare RBCs and PG coated RBCs, when transfusing it in vivo. In conclusion, cell surface coating with HA-Ga deceives the immune system, and it is available for foreign cells to avoid attack form the recipient. |
