Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is suitable for mass production of hydrogen owing to the low installation cost resulting from the absence of precious metal catalyst. Zirfon, a commercial porous membrane for AWE, has insufficient gas barrier property, demanding a need for the development of a large-area porous membrane with high ionic conductivity and low hydrogen permeability. In this study, a slurry was prepared by dispersing zirconia and polymer binder with planetary ball milling, and the well-dispersed slurry was coated on a PPS mesh. The porous structure developed was confirmed through the SEM measurement. The fabricated porous membrane was evaluated for area resistance, cell performance, bubble point and hydrogen permeability. The porous membrane, prepared from optimized process conditions, showed high ionic conductivity and improved gas barrier properties, making it a promising candidate for AWE. |
