Hydrophobic Barrier Assisted Formation of Vertically Layered Capacitive Electrodes within a Single Sheet of Paper |

Flexible energy storage devices are of significant interest for wearable device applications. In this regard, with its porous structure, paper has emerged as a next-generation energy storage material. Herein, we introduce a technology for fabricating paper-based supercapacitor electrodes in which the electrodes are vertically separated by a hydrophobic barrier within a single sheet of paper. The paper supercapacitor exhibited a large areal capacitance of 560.2 mF cm−2 at 0.2 mA cm−2, an excellent cycling performance with 95.2 % retention after 2000 cycles, and stable flexibility and foldability. The maximum power and energy densities were measured to be 1.597 mW cm−2 and 28.74 μWh cm−2, respectively, which exceed limitations of previous paper-based supercapacitors. The paper supercapacitors in this study can be developed infinitely for other energy storage applications like batteries and other wearable electronic devices that require flexibility and multiple layers. |
