Photo-alignment methods have image sticking problems, which can be severe defects for the development of LCD panels. The polyimide containing photo-reactive molecules in a side chain was synthesized. Photo-alignment was induced by linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light irradiation. The mechanism for photoalignment will be discussed. The unreacted photo-reactive functional groups were deactivated using vapor phase bromine, or ethanethiol. The interface reactions of vapor phase bromine or ethanethiol with polyimide surfaces have been studied using in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), FT-IR and contact angle analyser, UV-visible spectrometer. The surface plasmon resonance(SPR) was used to analyse the intermolecular interaction at the polyimide surface. Ethanethiol and bromine reacted with polyimide surfaces, which transformed to the C-S or C-Br bnds. Therefore, it was investigated photo-alignment characteristics. |
