DNA is one of the abundant biomaterials in nature, which possesses a right-handed double helix. The helical structure of DNA forms grooves. Recently, several researchers have explored a liquid crystal (LC) alignment film based on the intriguing structure of DNA.[1,2] In these previous studies, LC molecules on the DNA alignment film were aligned along the helical grooves of the DNA. In this study, in-plane switching (IPS) display device was fabricated by using DNA alignment film. LC molecules were aligned at an oblique angle with respect to the direction of DNA molecules. This oblique orientation of LC molecules on the DNA film could provide more convenience for the fabrication of the IPS cell than conventional rubbing process. Also, we confirmed electro-optical performance of the fabricated device. This device based on DNA film shows a possibility of biomaterial-based devices through combination of device and biological material. |
