Focal conic domain structures of smectic-A liquid crystals derived from disclination lines with an In-plane switching configuration |

Focal conic domains (FCDs) are commonly observed defect structures in smectic-A phase. These structures have attracted interest due to their unique optical properties and possibilities of application for templates. Here, we have generated various FCD structures derived from disclination lines in nematic phase on In-plane switching cell. In-plane electric field and homeotropic boundary condition induce a hybrid alignment which results in defect structures. These various FCD structures are generated depending on applied voltage. The results were precisely analyzed by polarized optical microscopy (POM), laser-scanning fluorescent confocal microscopy (LSFCM), and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) methods for determining the molecular ordering and orientation. |
