In the face of rising petroleum prices and increasing environmental concerns, bio-based production of fuels and chemicals have been receiving great attention. When microorganisms are isolated from nature, their capability to produce the chemicals of our interest is rather limited. Thus, the metabolic pathways of microorganisms should be optimized to reduce the formation of byproducts and enhance the production of desired chemicals. For this, the selected genes in metabolic pathways could be deleted or amplified intuitively. However, this approach has some limitations for the dramatic outcome because its scope of engineering the cells is too local to understand the super-complex metabolic networks of cells. Accordingly, we developed several in silico genome-scale metabolic models and simulation algorithms. Then, those were applied to develop the industrial microorganisms (e.g., 2,3-butanediol). |
