Poly(4-vinyl pyridine)s (P4VP) with controlled molecular weights and low polydispersities were first synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in the presence of 2-cyanopropan-2-yl dithiobenzoate (CPDB) as a chain transfer agent. The resulting P4VP macro-RAFT agents were used as both a stabilizer and a photo-iniferter for the photo-induced dispersion polymerization of styrene (St) in ethanol at 70 oC. The dithiobenzoate RAFT agent in the end of the P4VP was homolytically cleaved under UV irradiation, and initiated the polymerization. The resulting PSt nanoparticles were characterized using 1H NMR, GPC, SEM, and FE-TEM. |
