Reactive mesogens(RMs) are liquid crystal(LC) materials but with additional reactive groups to allow polymerization. It has been known that the changes in the birefringence of RMs result in changes of interference colors between crossed polarizers. The birefringence of RMs is dependent on applied voltage, wavelength, and temperature. If a thin RM film is placed between crossed polarizers and transmitted light is measured as a function of temperature, changes of interference colors occur. The birefringence of RM is determined by orientation conditions and the molecular orientation is significantly affected by temperature. In this study, we fabricated retardation film with almost constant retardation value in visible range by temperature controlled birefringence. Retardation values were analyzed by retardation measurement system. The orientation of RM molecules was investigated by polarized-FTIR spectroscopy. Interference colors were observed by polarizing optical microscope. |
