In the field of triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC), designing an optimized UC system with high UC emission efficiency at low power density remains challenging. In this work, we synthesized novel donor-acceptor-heavy atom (D-A-H) molecule with an iodine atom heavier than bromine and chlorine. Additionally, the TTA-UC properties of the D-A-H molecules depending on the type of heavy atoms were studied. The singlet oxygen quantum yield and upconversion quantum yield of PY-MBD-2I were 92.2% and 9.7%, respectively. Moreover, threshold intensities (Ith) of PY-MBD-2Cl, PY-MBD-2Br, and PY-MBD-2I were lower (20-100 mW/cm2) than PY-MBD (400 mW/cm2). These results demonstrate that the introduction of iodine to D-A-H photosensitizer is effective strategy to improve the TTA-UC performances. |
