Graphene oxide (GO) is a promising nanofiller for enhancing polymer nanocomposite because of its extremely large surface area, high aspect ratios, mechanical flexibility, thermal/chemical stability, and functional groups. Here, we demonstrated that the GO-based Nafion composite membrane via solution casting method provided a barrier effect of methanol crossover on proton exchange membrane in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) and thus dramatically improved the performance of DMFCs. The incorporating of GO sheets into Nafion polymer matrix influenced the microstructure of Nafion with crystallite region of backbone and ionic cluster region. Efficient loading of GOs (1wt%) delivered the desirable size of transport pathway of Nafion membrane with the dramatic reducion of methanol permeability without decrease of proton conductivity. |
