Ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMCs) are very effective bending actuator with a low applied voltage. IPMC is composed of ion-exchange membrane and metal electrodes. Ion-exchange membrane is the most important part in the IPMC which maintains its shape and functions as a pathway of hydrated cations. So the performance of IPMC actuator can be largely affected by the properties of ion-exchange membranes. But all IPMC materials known to us have been restricted to some commercially available perfluorinated ionic polymer membranes for reasons of synthetic convenience. Besides, the thickness of IPMC is limited to the established commercial membrane thickness. In this study, IPMC actuation properties depending on the membrane properties were investigated. For this studies, various ion-exchange membranes were prepared by the modification of partially fluorinated or perfluorinated polymers. The prepared ion-exchanged polymers had high ionic conductivitiy and good actuation performance. Controlling the thickness of the initial fluoropolymer films , it was possible to increase IPMC’s thickness. |
