The Effects of Carbon nanofibers on Performance of IPMC Actuators Employing SSEBS Ionic Membrane |

Nano-scale reinforcing particles have encouraged great interest in the composite materials. Carbon nanofibers (CNF) are a new material. A ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMC) actuator employing the sulfonated poly(styrene-b-ethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene) (SSEBS) ionic membrane was developed. However, this type of actuator didn’t have good performance because it was very flexible. CNF as reinforcement for polymer composites increased the electromechanical bending performance of SSEBS actuator greatly. The bending responses under both DC and AC excitations were investigated. The generative current was synchronous with respect to the applied voltages in voltage-current test. The surface and cross-sectional morphology of SSEBS actuator were investigated by SEM. Microcracks were observed on the surface of the platinum electrodes. CNF were homogeneous dispersed in the matrix in the TEM observation. This phenomenon proved the good compatibility between SSEBS and CNF. |
