Butyl rubber (isobutylene isoprene rubber, IIR), a synthetic rubber composed of isobutylene with a small amount of isoprene. IIR has favorable properties including high chemical stability, high elasticity, high damping and excellent impermeability to gas and weatherability. Thus, IIR is employed in automobile, construction, adhesives and industrial application. Rubber process oils are used during the processing and production of rubber compounds. For a butyl rubber, petroleum-based paraffin oil is conventionally used. The current approach in the industry to replace the petroleum-based process oils has involved the preparation of bio-based process oils such as vegetable oil derivatives. Herein, we report that preparation of pentyl-epoxidized soybean oil(P-ESO) through ring opening reaction of pentyl alcohol and epoxidized soybean oil. IIR was formulated with P-ESO. The effect of process oil on formulation was studied by Mooney viscosity and DeMattia Flex Cracking (D.M.F.C.) test. |
