By adopting the coil-globule transition concept of DNA to turbulent drag reduction (DR) phenomena, we examined its structural effect on the drag reduction. Addition of spermidine (SPD) into turbulent flow as a condensing agent of the lambda-DNA showed sudden decrease of the drag reducing efficiency. On the other hand, the resultant difference in DR efficiency was explained via the origin of those changes, which can be conclusively verified via the electrophoresis experiment. Despite the different flow condition, all lambda-DNA molecules possessed the same half-cut dimension, implying that the discrete change of the DNA conformation can dramatically alter the flow characteristics. |
