Thermotropic liquid crystal polymers (TLCPs) are super engineering plastics characterized by outstanding mechanical properties, dimensional stability, and easy melt-processibility in the liquid crystalline state above the melting temperature. On the other hand, the very fast crystallization or solidification rate of TLCPs causes the microstructural differences between surface and center, resulting in the formation of a core-shell structure for the molded material. In this study, we investigate the effects of injection molding temperature and time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TLCP synthesized from p-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4,4’-biphenol, terephthalic acid, and isophthalic acid. The microstructural features are characterized using a scanning electron microscope, wide-angle X-ray diffractometer, and X-ray microscope. The thermal properties are analyzed using a DSC and TGA. The tensile and flexural mechanical properties are measured using a universal testing machine. |
