Surface facet and strain are the significant factors that govern catalytic activity. However, finding the composition dependent structure-activity relationship under controlled surface environment is challenging due to the synthetic obstacles. Here, we synthesized facet and strain controlled Co-Mn spinel oxide surfaces by using epitaxial growth on Co3O4 nanocubes. The composition gradient synthesis which is commonly used for strain free quantum dot for highly luminescent LED is applied to minimized the surface strain. The model oxygen reduction reaction is analyzed experimentally and theoretically to reveal the composition-activity relationship excluding strain- and facet-related factors. The activity shows volcano-like trend according to the Mn/Co composition, and the best catalyst shows comparable activity with benchmark Pt catalyst. This synthetic protocol for strain- and facet-controlled nanocrystal suggests new platform to anlalyze structure-activity relationship in controlled envrionment. |
