A perylene-based lyotropic chromic liquid crystal (PDI) was newly designed and synthesized for the fabrication of macroscopically oriented and patterned thin film polarizer (OP-TFP) on the flexible polymer substrates. The phase behavior and molecular self-assembly structure of perylene-diimide (PDI) were confirmed by spectroscopic, scattering and microscopic techniques. After mechanically shearing the PDI in aqueous solution on the flexible polymer substrates, we fabricated the OP-TFP by etching the unpolymerized regions selectively blocked by photomask during the photopolymerization. After the surface treatment and photopolymerization, solvent and scratch resistances were significantly enhanced. The surface morphology was further investigated by optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and three-dimensional (3D) surface nanoprofiler.
