Thermoreversible Crosslinking of Maleated Butyl Rubber with Glycerol |

Thermoreversible equilibrium reaction between maleated butyl rubber (MAH-g-IIR) and glycerol was studied. Orthogonal experimental design (OED) was used to predict and explain the effect of the molar ratio of glycerol to anhydride, the volume of solvent, the temperature and time on this equilibrium reaction. XRD studies revealed that the presence of microphase-separated aggregates acting as physical crosslinks was demonstrated for MAH-g-IIR and all crosslinked materials. DSC thermogram showed an endotherm corresponding to the breakage of ester covalent bond around 170 °C. The crosslinking of MAH-g-IIR was reprocessable via compression molding at temperatures 175 °C or above. |
