Synthesis and Self-Polishing Performance of Zinc based Copolymers for Marine Paints |

Antifouling paints are used to protect ship hulls from fouling settlement and to improve craft speed by reducing water friction. Among all the different solutions which proposed throughout the history of antifouling paints, tributyltin self-polishing copolymer(TBT-SPC) paints had been the most successful paints against biofouling attachment. However, the TBT-SPC systems caused many problems in the marine environment. So, a number of new antifouling paints have been studied in many laboratories. One of these, zinc acrylate copolymers have been reported as suitable binder for such alternative paints. Therefore, we synthesized zinc containing copolymers with cycloalkyl acrylate monomer and changed the composition of each monomer to compare self-polishing properties and physical properties. The characterizations of copolymers were carried out by GPC, 1H-NMR and FT-IR. And self-polishing properties were monitored by a rotary machine. |
