Mechanophore are well-known molecules designed to be broken specific covalent bond preferentially by response of mechanical stimuli. Spiropyran, a reversible mechanophore, undergoes ring opening isomerization between the colorless spirocyclic(SP) form to the colored merocyanine(MC) form upon UV/visible light irradiation and mechanical stress. Spiropyran based hydrogel could be reusable multi-stimuli-responsive. However, spiropyran is a hydrophobic molecule which has difficulty using with hydrogel. Generally, making spiropyran based hydrogel have to provide hydrophobic environment which reduces effectiveness and sensitivity of ring isomerization. In this study, we introduced polyethylene glycol (PEG) for functionalized spiropyrans, PEG-spiropyran-PEG (PEG-SP-PEG), as a cross-linker. Use of PEG-SP-PEG can enable mechano-induced and sensitive hydrogel which shows mechanochemical activation by swelling kinetic. |
