Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) are melt blended through extruder and molded. Investigation on the mechanical behavior and morphological characteristics of the blend show that addition of PVDF declined the mechanical property of the blend in comparison to that of TPU. Also, the electroactive phase (i.e., β-phase) of PVDF was disappeared. But, on stretching the blend and rapid expansion of supercritical fluid (SCF) during foaming of the blend, intense β-phase was obtained. The mechanism behind the β-phase formation may be attributed with the self-polarization of PVDF. Characterization methods, viz., spectroscopic analysis (i.e., FTIR), morphological investigation (i.e., SEM) and mechanical property supported the underlying mechanism. |
