A novel polar functionalization strategy for nonpolar high-density polyethylene (HPDE) was studied, adopting a fast chain transfer reaction of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) technique. Firstly, a selected polar polymer was prepared through traditional RAFT technique and was analyzed by using gas chromatography, gel permeation chromatography and proton nuclear magnetic resonance. The polar polymer chains were then grafted onto the HDPE backbone through a melt grafting-onto process, affording polar functional HDPE. The characteristics of the resulting HDPE were investigated with special interest in dyeability. The dyeability of the modified HDPE was also compared with that of conventional HDPE.
