Characterization of mesophase formation in PFO added mesophase pitch |

The behavior of pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO) added mesophase pitch (MP) during thermal reaction was studied. PFO was mixed with MP fine powder which can substitute mesogen for accelerate of mesophase formation. MP was sieved below 90 μm after fine grinding, and it mixed with PFO to weight ratio of 100:0, 93:7, 95:5, 93:7 and 90:10 respectively. Reaction temperature was 410 ℃ isothermally during 5 hours in normal pressure. The result showed that PFO conversion is increased with MP additive with decrease of the softening point. It seemed to low boiling point compound in PFO is combined at MP which is nucleation. And bulk mesophase is appeared by MP additive, and the micro-structure is also changed from mosaic structure to flow structure. And bulk structure seem like muscles because of diffusion of mesophase in the isotropic matrix. |
