CdS nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized in the channels of mesoporous silica SBA-15 by ion-exchange method. Before impregnation of Cd2+, the external surface of mesoporous silica SBA-15 was selectively functionalized by use of phenyltrimethoxysilane to minimize uncontrolled adsorption of cadmium ions on the outside of the mesopores. The results of characterization by powder X-ray diffraction patterns, transmission electron microscopy show that the prepared CdS nanoparticles were confined in the mosopores of SBA-15, and have an average particle size of about 3 nm. The onset of absorption of the CdS-incorporated SBA-15 in UV-vis spectra shows obvious blue-shift in comparison with that of the bulk CdS. It is postulated that the impregnation of cadmium ions into the mesoprous silica SBA-15 comes through ion-exchange reaction between protonated surfactant and cadmium ions.
