Fluorine-containing polymer membranes such as DuPont™ Nafion® have been most frequently employed in fabrication of PEMFCs, which have good mechanical and chemical properties, excellent proton conductivity, and long-term durability. However, some problems associated with such membranes include the complexity of manufacturing process, high cost, and low performance at high temperature. In this study, poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) was used as a model copolymer because of its good thermal stability, excellent chemical resistance, and good mechanical properties. The sulfonated PEEK (SPEEK) membranes were crosslinked via electron beam irradiation in the presence of 4,4’-diacryloylphenyl ether as crosslinking agent. The crosslinked polymer membranes were characterized with respect to dimensional stability, chemical stability, proton conductivity, mechanical strength, methanol crossover. etc. The experimental results will be presented in details. |
