Aerogels are a class of ultra-porous nanomaterials with high surface area, high porosity, and low density. They are presently of great interest in a wide range of industrial field applications as an important material. For application of photocatalytic methanol degradation, titania and titania-silica composite aerogels were applied as photocatalysts. Both of them had higher adsorption capacities than Degussa P-25. While the methanol degradation efficiency of P-25 was observed to be 50-60%, those of the titania aerogels made from either alkoxide or non-alkoxide sol-gel route were observed to be above 95%. Particularly titania-silica composite aerogels exhibited the methanol degradation efficiency of above 90% regardless of the lower titanium contents. This high efficiency can be explained by high surface area of aerogel materials and the corresponding high dispesion of Ti components. |
