Structuring Bijel-templated Metal Oxide via Vaporation-induced Phase Separation (VIPS) |

Bicontinuousinterfacially jammed emulsion gels (bijels), one of the uniqueparticle-stabilized biphasic systems, have been developed to overcome thelimitation from discrete liquid droplets of typical Pickering emulsions.Herein, we introduced a bijel-templated metal-oxide structure (MO bijel) fromvaporization-induced phase separation methods. For this, the silica-dispersedternary mixture consisting of oil, water and alcohol with desired compositionwas prepared and rapid removal of alcohol triggered phase separation. Duringphase separation, in-situ surface modified silica nanoparticles trapped at theinterface and formed bijels. The bijel template of MO structure was finallyprepared with polymerization of the oil phase. We obtained MO-bijlescalcination of Sn precursor-casted bijel template to deposit SnO2 layer onbijel surface. The observation and characterization of MO bijel structuresuggested a potentialapplication including catalytic membrane, electronics, sensors. |
