Staining of microplastics (MPs) with fluorescent dyes has been a requested procedure for their effective detection. Previous efforts generally collect MPs through filtration from water, followed by drying and staining of the MPs with dyes in solvents. To develop a real-time monitoring system of MPs in river or sewage treatment water, in this study, dispersed non-polar fluorescent dyes with surfactants are introduced for in-situ staining of MPs in water. Effect of various parameters, such as staining temperature, time, type/concentration of dye/surfactants, and concentration of MPs, on the staining characteristics are investigated. This work was supported by Korea Environment Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI) through Measurement and Risk assessment Program for Management of Microplastics Project, funded by Korea Ministry of Environment (MOE, grant number 2020003110003). |
