제목 Preparation of highly monodispersed polymer nanoparticles by living radical emusion polymerization
초록 Nano- to micro- scaled polymer particles with adequate size distributions are used in a variety of industrial fields such as TFT-LCD, drug delivery systems, toners, chromatographic column packing materials, protein purification, and diagnostic sensors.
The living radical polymerization is characterized by its unique reaction mechanism where radicals are weakly and reversibly combined to the polymeric chain ends to cntrol the molecular weight very easily. A number of studies have been recently reported upon its synthetic mechanism in the single phase such as bulk or solution state, but few were upon emulsion or dispersion method. The iniferter is a key material that enables living radical polymerization to be successfully conducted, because it acts as an initiator, chain transfer agent, and terminator simultaneously. The sur-iniferter is a reagent where surfactant function is added to the iniferter. When the living radical polymerization method is applied in the emulsion state using this sur-iniferter, ionic charges can be provided on the growing polymeric particle surfaces. In this contribution, highly monodispersed polystyrene nano-particles were prepared via living radical emulsion polymerization method. Anionic charges were provided on the particle surface using a novel sur-iniferter. Its concentration effect on the ultimate particle size and its distribution was investigated.
