Polyethyleneimine (PEI) and cinnamic acid (CA) form conjugates by electrostatic interactions between amine groups and carboxyl groups. The conjugate exhibits amphiphilic since PEI is hydrophilic and CA is hydrophobic. Thus, the amphipathic PEI/CA conjugate can form a self-assembly by hydrophobic interaction. The PEI/CA self-assembly was loaded on the cubic phase to appear a pH-sensitive property. First, the monoolein and CA were melted at 50 °C and then PEI dissolved buffer solution (pH 7.0) at the same temperature was slowly added. This was kept in darkness at 40 °C until all the water phase is absorbed. The cubic phase consisted of a monoolein lipid bilayer and water channel, and its structure was confirmed through a transmission electron microscope. A water-soluble dye was loaded on the water channel of cubic phase, and the release profile of the dye was observed for 27 hours by adding buffer solutions having different pH values (pH 5.0, 7.0, and 9.0). |
