Nylon 6,6 (PA66) composites containing noncovalently functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and carbon fiber (CF) were prepared for reinforcement of the PA66 composites. 1-pyrenebutyric chloride (PBC) was absorbed on the surface of MWCNT and CF by simple in-situ functionalization based on masterbatch and wetting process. Then, the MWCNT and CF functionalized with PBC were melt-mixed with PA66 in a twin extruder and acyl chloride groups in the PBC reacted with amine groups in PA66 during the extrusion. As a result, PBC was covalently grafted with PA66 at the surface of MWCNT and CF. The PA66/MWCNT/CF composite containing PBC showed the best interfacial adhesion between PA66 and MWCNT (or CF) and the uniform dispersion of the MWCNT and CF in the PA66 matrix. For fixed MWCNT and CF contents in the composite, the mechanical properties of the PA66 composite containing PBC adsorbed MWCNT and CF were higher than those of the PA66 composite containing pristine MWCNT and CF. |
