제목 | The Case Study of Star City Rainwater Harvesting System |
초록 | Decentralized Rainwater Management is likely to play an important role for climate change (CC) adaptation to complement existing centralized urban water infrastructure in terms of safety improvement and the reduction of energy costs in construction and maintenance. The Star-City rainwater harvesting system (RWHS) has been operating since 2007 and is receiving worldwide attention as a model water management system. Star-City is a major real estate development project of more than 1,300 apartment units in Gwangjin-gu, an eastern suburb of Seoul. The catchment area consists of 6,200 m2 of rooftop and 45,000 m2 of terrace. The basic idea in the design for the RWHS was to collect the first 100 mm of rainwater from the complex and to use this for gardening and public toilets. Altogether, 3,000 m3 of water may be stored in three separate tanks with a total floor area of 1,500 m2. The innovative concept applied in this project was the city government’s incentive program for the developer, which is that the developer would be permitted to construct three percent more floor space above what would normally be allowed. In Star-City building complex having a tank-volume-to-catchment-area ratio of 5.8 m3/100 m2, a facility with a 10-year design period would provide protection from a 50-year rainfall flood event. The rainwater supply of the Star-City RWHS was about 26,000 m3 in 2007 to 2008. By estimating cost to install, operate and maintain RWH facility and benefits from utilizing rainwater, Star-City RWHS shows high economic efficiency. From 2007 to 2008 operation year, about 26,000 m3 of rainwater was supplied and about 6,500 kWh of energy was saved. From the indications of the above results, installations such as the Star-City RWH system can be good options as short- and long-term CC adaptations to improve the existing urban water infrastructure. Furthermore, The Star-City approach shows that CC adaptation in a newly constructed residential complex is possible by the installation of a proactive and multipurpose RWHS. |
