Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) is an abnormal opening between the bladder and the vagina. Although surgical repair is the most common method for treating affected women with a high success rate, the procedure is highly dependent on an individual surgeon’s experience and associated with re-hospitalization and longer recovery periods. In addition, surgical approach is difficult to provide tension-free, watertight closure, and low morbidity rate. Thus, to resolve such problems, non-surgical treatment strategies using tissue adhesives have been implemented as sole treatment option. In this study, we proposed water-immiscible mussel protein-based bioadhesive (WIMBA) as a promising sealant for VVF management. Herein, we established an animal model of VVF and standardized the technique. After treatment of VVF with WIMBA and three control groups, the effectiveness of the treatment was assessed by gross examination, filling test and urodynamic test. |
