Gold Nanorod-Loaded, Chitosan-Conjugated Nano-Carriers for In-Vitro Photothermal Cancer Therapy |

Previously, we reported Pluronic-based nano-carriers (bare forms and chitosan-conjugated forms) which possess excellent reservoir characteristics with a simple loading method and a high loading capacity of large molecules as drug delivery systems. These nano-carriers were employed as carriers of gold nanorods (GNR). The GNR-loaded nano-carriers could serve as an imaging agent for cancer (SCC7) cells and a hyperthermia agent with improved photothermal cancer therapy in the NIR region. The GNR-loaded nano-carriers showed improved in-vitro photothermolysis of cancer cells as well as in-vitro stability of GNRs compared to GNRs themselves. Specially, the GNR-loaded nano-carriers using chitosan forms were much more efficient and selective for cancer cell uptake and damaging by an NIR laser compared to bare GNRs.
