Asymmetric structures have recently received much attention for applications such as gecko-like dry adhesives, micro-fluidic systems, and so forth. We fabricated polymer-based Janus structures by nano/micro-molding of a photo-curable polymer and oblique metal deposition on polymeric structures. With Janus nanopillars, we could realize adhesion hysteresis. In order to realize the more pronounced adhesion hysteresis, we bent nanopillars toward metal side or polymer side by exploiting the difference in thermal expansion coefficients between polymer pillars and metal films or the residual stress during metal deposition. By changing parameters such as oblique deposition angles, curing time and metal thickness, we were able to control the bending angles of nanopillars as well as the bending shape. In addition, with the Janus structures, we could control the wetting direction without any external forces. |
