There are many requirements for plastic substrate for flexible displays application, such as barrier properties, light transmittance, surface roughness, and surface hardness. Barrier properties were considered most important and many attempts to enhance the barrier properties have been performed. Most of the attempts are too complicated and high vacuumm technology to be aaplied to production scale. Nanoclay with high aspect ratio can make composite layer with polymer to enhance the several requirements for plastic substrate by relatively simple process. In this work, nanoclays were modified by organic intercalation agents to enhance the d-spacing and compatibility, and the modified clays were introduced into polymer matrix to form composite layer with improved barrier properties and optical properties for flexible displays application.
