Chemically durable and low-cost Backsheet films with improved barrier property to water vapor for photovoltaic module |

Photovoltaic(PV) modules have been perceived as representative renewable energy devices owing to their low emission of chemical waste and relative low operation cost. An important polymeric component in silicon-based PV modules is “Backsheet”, which is generally composed of poly(vinyl fluoride)(PVF) and poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) films and poly(urethane) adhesive. Desirable Backsheet requires electrical insulation and moisture protection for PV operation. In this study, PET multilayered films are used, instead of PVF with high durability to water vapor and other chemicals, for developing a relatively cheap PV module. Since a normal PET is vulnerable to hydrolysis. In addition, nano-sized hydrophobic silica particles are added in the adhesive layer to minimize the fraction of free volume which water vapor, a major source to cause hydrolytic decomposition of PET layer, is permeate though. We evaluate the fundamental characteristics of nanocomposite-typed adhesive in Backsheet. |
